Parenting Resources

Being a member of our Tiger family means having an access to a multitude of positive parenting resources.  We offer a collection of materials on parenting challenges and ways to meaningfully engage in your child’s academic and social life.  Below are links to positive support videos and brochures on various parenting topics. Parents are encouraged to browse through the list of resources or call the Family Resource Center at 419.468.3134, ext. 13549, and schedule an appointment for one-on-one consultation.  In addition, FRC will occasionally organize educational events and workshops for parents and guardians on current parenting topics.  The list of these Parent Topic Nights will be listed under Upcoming Events section below.

Social Emotional Learning - What is it and why does it matter?

Being able to actively and meaningfully engage in your child's social, emotional, and academic life also requires incorporating practices of the concept known as Social Emotional Learning.
"Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions."
"The same ways we exercise our bodies or practice dribbling a ball, we have to practice identifying, expressing and managing our emotions. Empathy is a muscle we have to flex. By consistently doing so, when we encounter stressful situations, we have a toolkit that we can readily draw upon to help us navigate that stressor or de-escalate the conflict."
At Galion Middle School, our students have an opportunity to learn about Social Emotional Learning during their Advisory Period.  With the help of our School Counselor, Ms. Gabrielle Carsey, and our Student Engagement Coordinator, Mrs. Amy Heydinger, our teachers deliver SEL lessons on Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social-Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making.

These lessons can be further strengthen at home by parents and guardians. The following article helps parents identify ways to incorporate Social Emotional Learning techniques with their children at home: 10 ways parents can bring social emotional learning home. Furthermore, the below TEDex video discusses the importance of these valuable SEL parenting and schooling practices and the life-long benefits they bring to our children.

To learn more about SEL practices, please visit our School Counselor's, Ms. Gabrielle Carsey's, web page at GMS Counseling Corner.

Please continue to check the district calendar and our Facebook page for upcoming events.
